More than three dozen vendors will take part in the ninth annual “Go Green” Home and Garden Show, sponsored by Soroptimist International of Fallon, coming to the Fallon Convention Center April Saturday and Sunday..
The show will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday rom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking and admission are free.
Chairwoman Marcia Vinson said she expects 40 vendors at the show this year. During the past two years, the show saw more than 50 vendors and some had to be turned away due to space limitations at the convention center, Vinson said. However, the struggling economy and scheduling conflicts will prevent some vendors from participating.
About half the vendors deal directly with home and garden supplies and the remaining vendors are local businesses. Vinson said several vendors are traveling from Reno, Carson City, Yerington and Fernley.
A raffle will be held during the show and tickets can be purchased for $1 each or six for $5. Vinson said the raffle prizes include a Rada knife set and a Fallonopoly game.
Soroptimist club member Sue Chambers said several demonstrations will be held outside the convention center during the show. Saturday will feature demonstrations by Louie’s Home Center on tile cutting and setting for floor and wall tiles and how to install and care for ponds. Doreen Hill of Doreen’s Desert Rose will also hold a flower arranging demonstration Saturday.
Sunday’s demonstrations include installing and caring for ponds and the use of primers and painting techniques by Louie’s Home Center. Maxine Caprioli-Hight of Artistically Yours will also hold a demonstration on artistic painting. Chambers said additional demonstrations by other local businesses may be added before the weekend. A 50/50 bingo will be conducted outside between the demonstrations.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the show, and the Model Railroaders of Fallon will have a display outside, Vinson said.
The Soroptimist International of Fallon supports the community in various ways including the construction of Pioneer Park on North Maine Street, the Adopt-a-Child program, the holiday food basket program, the Wishing Tree and the Churchill County Senior Center, and the club provides clothes for sexual assault victims.
Vinson said the club is currently working on phase two of Pioneer Park which will provide a covered picnic area and expand the park along D Street.
The Soroptimist Club also provides three scholarships each year — a women’s opportunity award for an older, returning student who is head of her household, a $250 scholarship rewarding a 14-17 year old student for volunteerism and one provided for a graduating senior who also volunteers his or her time.
Chambers said the local club also participates in an international service project by supporting a needy child through Children International.
