Young people’s garden designs brought to life by Bramall Construction

Ten-year-old Megan Morris has ‘got the picture’ on the way her school’s garden should look…

So much so that the youngster’s drawings of the garden at Thorne Brooke Primary, Thorne, have been turned into reality by workmen at Bramall Construction.

Bramall brought Megan’s drawings to life following a competition amongst her classmates to see who could produce the best ideas for the school.

The team has replaced an old concrete-based pond with a vegetable patch, new beds and some benches made out of recycled material from Bramall’s building projects.

This is complimented by a sun dial in the middle of the garden and a greenhouse made from timber and recycled plastic bottles.

Bramall agreed to carry out the work after the School Council wrote to the company asking for support for the garden project. The school then invited pupils to enter a competition to design the garden, resulting in 50 entries being submitted.

Megan’s winning entry was selected by teachers and Bramall staff.

Megan’s teacher Rachel Hall said: “This garden has made a real and lasting impact and has become something that the children can take pride in.

“They have played a big part in deciding how it looks. We will be using the garden to grow vegetables that can be used in the canteen, so it will have a role in teaching the pupils about sustainability.

“Also, it has really brightened up the school environment and it has been a great experience for the children. We’re delighted with the result.”

Bramall has been working in Thorne to improve hundreds of Council-owned houses in partnership with St Leger Homes. The company also completed the conversion of the former Thorne Grammar School building into flats.

Geoff Sanderson, Bramall Contracts Manager, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to complete this work and see the impact it has had on the school and the pupils.

“It’s great to see everything in place and I hope that this gesture will make a fantastic impact on the local community.

“I’d like to congratulate the children who took part in the competition to design the garden. Some of their ideas were fantastic – they have made this garden what it is today.”
