'A Day in the Garden' at Cornwall nature museum

>> Friday, May 15, 2009

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum will host "A Day in the Garden" from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the museum's Outdoor Discovery Center on Muser Drive, across from 174 Angola Road, Cornwall.

The event will include the sixth annual wildflower sale, heirloom vegetable seedlings sale and gardening classes.

Planting native wildflowers provides food for birds, insects and other wildlife, and wildflowers require less maintenance than typical "garden center" plants. The museum will have a large variety of native wildflower plants, ferns and grasses for sale in sizes ranging from $4 to $12.

Heirloom vegetable seedlings for sale include eggplants, peppers, beans, zucchinis and tomatoes in varieties that have been around for more than 100 years. They are open-pollinated and free of genetic engineering.

At 10 a.m. the Cornell Cooperative Extension's master gardeners will offer a "Gardening 101" class, and at 11:30 a.m. the Cornwall Community Co-op will offer a class on how to grow vegetables from seeds. Classes are $3 each or both classes for $5.

At 1 p.m., participants will go on a short hike to see what native flowers, shrubs and trees are coming into flower at the Outdoor Discovery Center.
