Going Green Big Theme at Home and Garden Show

>> Monday, May 11, 2009

A huge convention just wrapped in Las Vegas, showcasing some of the latest lawn and garden, and hardware products that are going green.

The theme at the National Hardware Show and Lawn and Garden World is going green.

"We all need oxygen to breath. If we continue to pollute the atmosphere, in my case, my grandchildren will not be able to sustain life we all have now," said Robert Johnson with Bobbo Inc.

Johnson's hand-carved products are made from fast growing renewable albesia wood. The paints and finishes are non-toxic and the thermometers are mercury free. For less than $20, these products are affordable.

And if you're into gardening, there's potting soil is made from coconuts.

"We produce coconut milk, coconut food, and we have this recyclable fiber that we use to pay people to throw away," said Ahilan Thambinayagam with Coco Garden.

Thambinayagam says the potting soil absorbs and retains more water compared to regular potting soil. It's also a lot cheaper -- the biggest bag retails for under $10.

If you have a bigger budget and are looking to go green, Sun-Mar's toilet may be for you. "It's a composting toilet, and what's unique about it, it doesn't require water or sewage connection at all. What happens is the liquid waste that goes into it is evaporated up through a venting system. The solid waste bacterium digests and converts it into soil," said Fraser Sneddon with Sun-Mar.

A toilet like this will run about $1,500. Back to the more affordable products, when it comes to going green, the big craze is solar charged products. "Now we got solar battery chargers, we got solar phone chargers, we got solar flashlights, where you can put the case on your dash board of the car and charge the flashlight," said John Browder with Westinghouse Solar.
