Places to go: Flamingo Fling, Hidden Gardens of Fort Worth, "Define Your Style" seminar, and fall vegetable gardens

Flamingos, Hawaiian shirts, prizes, a Hybrid Ford Fusion test-drive, and helpful gardening information — where do we sign up? It’s all Saturday at the Flamingo Fling at Tim’s Landscape and Garden Center. For the Flamingo Contest, people are encouraged to make their own flamingo, or buy and decorate one (they’ll be on sale at Tim’s for $3.10), and half the proceeds will support Four Paws Animal Shelter. Prizes include gift certificates ($25-$100). Wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt, and if you’ve got the best one, you’ll win dinner for two at Fred’s Texas. And yes, there will also be informative talks about ways to reduce your watering needs, the importance of using native plants and, at 1:30 p.m., Channel 33’s Rebecca Miller will be on hand to discuss our current weather cycle. The event runs 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the garden center, 7319 W. Vickery Blvd., Fort Worth. For more information, call 817-732-6861.

Finally, it’s time for those elusive gardens to be found: It’s the Hidden Gardens of Fort Worth Tour. Presented by Historic Fort Worth, the tour will show off six gardens in the Ridglea neighborhood. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday; noon-4 p.m. Sunday. $15 for advance tickets; $20 on tour days. Rain or shine. For more information or tickets, call 817-336-2344 or visit www.historicfortworth.org. Tickets also are available at Archie’s Gardenland, 6700 Camp Bowie Blvd.; Dorian’s Interior Design, 2701 S. Hulen St.; and Into the Garden, 4600 Dexter Ave. in Fort Worth and 4527 McKinney Ave. in Dallas.

Lately, we’ve been mulling the idea of growing our own veggies, and Calloway’s free Saturday clinic sounds like just the ticket: "Preparing a Fall Vegetable Garden." 10:15 a.m. Saturday, all Calloway’s locations.

Need some help with color selection, furniture placement, space planning, window coverings? Let the experts help you define your style at a free, interactive Robb & Stucky design seminar. 11 a.m. Saturday at Robb & Stucky at Southlake Town Square. Space is limited, so reservations are requested. Call 817-410-3630.
