>> Tuesday, April 28, 2009
If you've been meaning to check out the "Growing Seasons" exhibit at the Waukesha County Museum, and also are getting into vegetable gardening mode, here's a two-fer opportunity.
Gardening expert Melinda Myers will be giving a "How to Plant a Vegetable Garden" workshop Sunday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, 101 W. Main St.. in Waukesha. She'll offer tips on selecting fruit and vegetable varieties suited to Wisconsin's growing conditions. She also will share ideas for creating a kitchen garden, planting containers filled with edible plants, or mixing fruits and vegetables into more traditional plantings. Tips will include design, planting and care for popular vegetables. Plus, Myers will feature new veggie varieties with ornamental appeal.
While you're at the museum, visit the "Growing Seasons" exhibit, which runs through June 28. The exhibit depicts a farm family's relationship with the seasons at the turn of the 20th-century in northern Illinois. It's based on an award-winning, non-fiction children's book by Elsie Lee Splear about her childhood remembrances, with paintings by Ken Stark. The exhibit includes objects the Lee family used at the time. The museum also is telling the story of changes in agricultural life in turn-of-the-century Waukesha County.
Tickets to the Myers workshop may be purchased in advance through the museum, or at the door, for $10 ($5 for members). The cost includes admission to the museum.
