AmeriCorps Week 2009 provides Princess Anne a community vegetable garden and gives its new youth center more than just an empty field.
Princess Anne Youth Day takes place 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Garland Hayward Youth Center in Princess Anne. The event is planned by the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art's Education Department, an AmeriCorps partner site.
The project allows local youth and community members to work together to plant a vegetable garden and create a compost bin while learning how to maintain the garden throughout the seasons.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology funds part of the project, which will bring in a birdbath, feeders, birdhouses, seeds and birding equipment.
Local dancers and hip-hop artists provide entertainment, and local businesses and vendors donate food and other items.
"Together we will plants seeds of hope that will produce a harvest of change in the youth of this community," said AmeriCorps member Krystal Wilson, who is organizing the event.
